Course Description: IADLTESTEffective public safety organizations rely on the application of proper field supervision. Our first-line supervisors and their oversight of our personnel ensure effective service to our communities, protect our organizations from litigation, and shield our officers from internal/external concerns. Most organizations send their supervisors to a one week class and never retrain them in up-to-date supervisory practices. We know organizations will not send them to another one week class for a similar topic. That is where this course comes into play. This full, one-day “tune-up” discusses the importance of this supervisory role as it relates to key areas of first-line supervision. This is an essential training program for Corporals and Sergeants of all experience levels. Many times, the list of observable dimensions, tasks, skills, or competency areas are listed by the agency, but the training on proactive supervisory skills to monitor and document these items are not adequately conveyed. Agencies should make these instruments Career Enhancement tools to provide meaningful feedback that allows our employees to reach their individual maximum potential.  If done correctly, this supervisory task can assist with developing employee motivation, enhancing organizational morale, identify future leaders, provide individualized employee development, and more.

  • J. Harris - Use of Force Trilogy Series:

The use of force in law enforcement is a dynamic and necessary element of the profession. It is essential that an organizational program is designed to ensure officers recognize immediate dangers, immediately determine mitigation opportunities, and employ force correctly when necessary. It is critical that supervisory oversight occurs in the field and immediately after force is utilized. Then, it is vital for mid-level leadership to conduct meaningful reviews discussing observations both downward to the officers involved and upward to others. That information cannot sit stagnant.  It must be incorporated into future training, policy updates, and command staff reviews. To protect our people, safeguard our agency’s image, and best serve the communities we protect, all levels of the organization must be actively involved. This program focuses on these endeavors.
