Course Description: The Trauma-Informed Telecommunications Course is designed to equip emergency telecommunicators, dispatchers, call takers, 9-1-1 specialists and their supervisors with the knowledge and skills necessary to interact with individuals who have experienced trauma in a sensitive and empathetic manner. Recognizing the widespread impact of trauma on individuals and communities, this course aims to transform policing practices by integrating trauma-informed approaches into our first-responder interactions. In addition, this course explains the impact that trauma has on our personnel and discusses key areas for telecommunicators and supervisory personnel to stay vigilant for to ensure vicarious and cumulative trauma doesn’t impact themselves, their loved ones, their fellow telecommunicators, or the public they are interacting with.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will:
- Define trauma and recognize the various types, signs and symptoms
- Understand PTSD and Vicarious Trauma and ways to recover from the impact it has on first-responders
- Review appropriate responses to situations using a Trauma-informed Approach
- Explore Trauma-Informed Interview techniques
- Discuss Vicarious and Cumulative Trauma and the impact it has on our first-responders in their personal and professional lives
Instructional Approach: This course employs a combination of lecture, case studies, practical exercises, and real-life scenarios to engage participants. Instructors with extensive experience in law enforcement leadership and supervision in telecommunications will guide attendees through the learning process.
Target Audience: This course is designed for all telecommunicators and supervisory personnel. NJ OETS approved, 8 BTC CTE’s and 4 EMD CTE’s when this course is coupled with a Dispatcher Update in the afternoon!
