Technology is rapidly changing how law enforcement agencies prevent crime, investigate cases, manage traffic, and protect their communities. Automated License Plate Readers, artificial intelligence, video analytics, connected camera networks, real-time crime centers, and other smart city technologies can dramatically expand an agency’s capabilities—but they also create new legal, ethical, operational, and public-trust challenges.
This four-hour course provides law enforcement professionals with a practical understanding of today’s emerging public safety technology and the responsibilities that come with using it. Participants will examine how systems such as ALPR, AI-powered analytics, integrated camera networks, and connected public-safety platforms are being used across the country, while exploring the legal issues, privacy concerns, data-sharing practices, policy requirements, and supervisory responsibilities surrounding their use.
Through real-world examples and practical scenarios, participants will learn how to evaluate technology before implementation, establish appropriate safeguards, properly respond to technology-generated investigative leads, audit employee use, manage vendor relationships, and reduce the risk of misuse, litigation, evidence issues, or damage to community trust.
This course is designed for patrol officers, investigators, supervisors, command personnel, intelligence personnel, real-time crime center staff, and agency leaders responsible for implementing or overseeing emerging law enforcement technology.
