The integrity of a law enforcement agency’s property and evidence operation is critical to successful prosecutions, public trust, and organizational accountability. Every item of evidence must be properly received, documented, secured, maintained, audited, and ultimately returned or destroyed in accordance with legal requirements and agency policy. A single mistake can compromise a criminal case, expose an agency to liability, or undermine confidence in the evidence management process.

Evidence Custodian: From Intake to Final Disposition is a comprehensive one-day course designed for personnel responsible for managing, supervising, or overseeing property and evidence operations. Whether you are a newly assigned evidence custodian, an experienced technician who has never received formal training, a first-line supervisor, or a command-level leader responsible for evidence room operations, or a District Attorney/Prosecutor attending to gain more understanding of the process and best practices, this course provides the knowledge and practical guidance needed to operate a secure, efficient, and accountable evidence management system.

Participants will examine the complete life cycle of property and evidence—from collection and initial intake through packaging, documentation, chain of custody, storage, security, audits, inventories, inspections, courtroom preparation, biological evidence considerations, firearms, controlled dangerous substances, currency, found property, safekeeping, and final disposition through return, forfeiture, or destruction.

The course also addresses policy development, risk management, accreditation considerations, internal controls, supervisory responsibilities, facility security, records management, and best practices for maintaining the integrity of the evidence room. Participants will learn practical strategies to reduce errors, improve efficiency, prepare for audits and inspections, and identify common deficiencies before they become significant organizational problems.

Through real-world examples, case studies, and practical instruction, attendees will leave with a clear understanding of the responsibilities, legal considerations, and operational best practices necessary to ensure the secure management of property and evidence from initial intake to final disposition.

Whether your agency is establishing a new evidence operation, strengthening existing practices, or preparing personnel for greater responsibility, this course provides the essential foundation for professional, accountable, and legally defensible evidence management.
